My buddy, Vice President Mike Pence

T

Hi Chris,
I’m the Photo Editor at Politico Magazine, we are doing a profile of Vice President
Mike Pence in the next print issue of Politico Magazine, the profile takes a look at
his time in Congress, Governor and where he got his start. We’d love to see if we
could use some of the photos of him that you have on your site for when he was
younger, they are really great photos and we would credit you.

If you could let me know if that would be possible I would greatly appreciate it.
I’ve attached some of the images we are interested in using.

Thanks!
Katie

Pelosi's Abortion Statements a Scandal Says EWTN Program Host

Contact: Michelle Johnson, EWTN Global Catholic Network, 205-795-5769, mjohnson@ewtn.com

IRONDALE, Alabama, Aug. 27 /Christian Newswire/ -- EWTN Global Catholic Network TV Host Father Mitch Pacwa S.J. took Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to task last night for misrepresenting Church teaching on abortion in an Aug. 24 interview with Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press.

In her interview, Pelosi told Brokow that "as an ardent, practicing Catholic" who has studied the issue of when life begins for "a long time," she could say that the Church fathers, especially St. Augustine, were not sure of when life begins, and that the Church had only made this decision in the past 50 years. She then drew the conclusion that this should not impact on a woman's right to choose.

On his Tuesday night show, "Threshold of Faith," Father Pacwa explained that Pelosi was in grave error about the teaching of the Church fathers, summarized what other Church leaders are saying about her public statements, and offered her this piece of advice:

"[A]s an ardent, practicing Catholic, you must conform your conscience to the teaching of the Church that goes back [to] the very beginning of the Church on this moral issue."

After explaining how grave a sin abortion was to Church fathers and citing early Church leaders and Church documents, Father Pacwa gave this moral counsel to Pelosi: "If you are ignorant and you don't know [when life begins], then you go on the side of safety and protecting rights. You don't bomb a city where there might be a lot of civilians. You say, 'Well, I’m not sure.' Well, then be on the side of safety. Protect the lives of the innocent, the non-combatants.

"Same with the unborn children. You must also go on the side of your ignorance to say then, "If I don't know, then I'll protect all the more. I don't want to act while I'm ignorant."

Father Pacwa called on Pelosi to use her position "to make sure not that there are few and rare abortions, but that there are zero abortions and that you would do everything you can to protect life. This is the duty of us all."

My friend, Gary Varvel, captured the moment perfectly.

I am only going to visit this one time. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, what you did immediately following the State of the Union Address is reprehensible. What message was sent to the rest of the world? This is not the way Roman Catholics are supposed to behave.

9 Days For Life Novena - Day 8: Civic Leaders

T

Left to Right: U.S. Senator Dick Luger, along with the "Three Amigo's" Chris Dickson, Dr. Tom Ringenberg, Mike Pence (who later became U.S. Congressman, Governor, and then Vice President of the United States) Circa 1988

May civic leaders work for the protection of all human life, in every stage and circumstance.

Prayers:

The Our Father, 3 Hail Mary's, the Glory Be

Reflection:

The entire moral vision of our nation is based on respect for the dignity and sanctity of the human person. The Declaration of Independence boldly affirms that first among our inalienable rights is the right to life, given to us by our Creator. Yet despite being so solemnly proclaimed, the right to life is today threatened and often denied, particularly at the moment when life is most fragile. Our laws should, first and foremost, protect life, but currently our laws abandon the most vulnerable and violate our nation's core principles. For "there can be no genuine justice in our society until the truths upon which our nation was founded are more perfectly realized in our culture and law." (Living the Gospel of Life, 14) Laws and policies that legalize or promote an intrinsic evil like abortion violate the virtue of justice. Those who work as public officials and civic leaders have a duty to serve the common good, and therefore have a profound obligation to safeguard this most fundamental right. As Christians, we are called to be leaven in the world, transforming our culture from within. Through our own prayer, witness, and civic participation, we can encourage our leaders to truly answer their call to protect the rights of all people, for "there can be no true democracy without the recognition of every person's dignity and without respect for his or her rights." (Evangeliun vitae 101)

Acts of Reparation (Choose one):

-     Sacrifice some of your free time to do a small act of service, such as making breakfast for a family member, writing a not of encouragement to a coworker, or praying for the intentions of a friend. Sometimes restrictions on religious freedom constrain our efforts to live out the Gospel of Life. We must be free to live out our Catholic faith in the public square.
-   Offer this prayer Prayer for Religious Liberty, that Christians may always be free to respect, protect, and defend human life.
-    Offer some other sacrifice, prayer, or act of penance that you feel called to do for today's intention.

One step further:

In 2004, the U.S. bishops reaffirmed the Church's consistent teaching that abortion is an intrinsic evil and offered guidance to Catholic politicians regarding this fundamental teaching. Read "Catholics in Political Life," in which the bishops outline the responsibility of Catholics in the public square to share in the "Unequivocal commitment to protect human life and dignity and to preach the Gospel in difficult times." "Living the Gospel Life," no. 14, Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life), no. 101

President Donald Trump becomes the first President of the United States to speak at the Annual March for Life.

We have never had such a Pro-Life President before. In 2019, the president spoke via video to marchers, while Vice President Mike Pence attended in person. “When we look into the eyes of a newborn child, we see the beauty and the human soul and the majesty of God’s creation,” Mr. Trump told the crowd last year. “We know that every life has meaning and that every life is worth protecting.”

In Congress, Pence Had Own Beef With Court Weighing Immigration Ban

T

More than a decade ago, criticism of the courts — specifically the 9th Circuit — came from the deeply religious future vice president

Vice President Mike Pence once had his own quarrel with the court weighing the legality of President Donald Trump’s immigration executive order.
The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is weighing the Justice Department's move to reinstate Trump’s immigration order, which bars travelers and refugees from seven Muslim-majority nations. The order was blocked by a lower court last week.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the entire federal court system after his order was blocked, saying Wednesday morning that “we are at risk” because of court’s action.
But more than a decade ago, criticism of the courts — specifically the 9th Circuit — came from the deeply religious future vice president.
Pence, then a Republican congressman from Indiana, made his Christian faith a central aspect of his political identity. America and religion are closely intertwined, he explained. And, in his view, federal courts like the 9th Circuit threatened to disrupt this tradition.
He spoke about this on an Indiana radio show hosted by two self-described “evangelical Bible-thumpers” Chris Dickson and Ron Chappell, in 2003.
The topic: an attempt to remove Christmas as a federal holiday filed by a “secular” lawyer.
When asked about this by Chappell, Pence springboarded into criticism of the 9th Circuit.
“People recognize how radically secular the 9th Circuit has become,” he said. “It was that court that recently ruled that the Pledge of Allegiance needed to be amended to remove the phrase ‘under God,’ I think we can expect more of these kind of strange cases.”
The Pledge case was a popular issue for the religious right. In a 2004 Gallup poll, 91 percent of those surveyed responded that they wanted the words "in God" to remain in the Pledge.
Pence moved on to speak more broadly about the role of religion in government.
“These are all designed to achieve the goal of eradicating any vestige of religion from our national life,” he said. “People have come to believe that the freedom of religion enshrined in the First Amendment is the freedom from religion. It is most certainly not that.”
He talked about religious paintings that hang in the U.S. Capitol before circling back to the courts.
“We’re headed into, I think, a continuing battle over the meaning of the First Amendment, freedom of religion,” he said. “It’s a battle that begins with who’s in the White House to appoint federal jurists because increasingly the courts have decided to preempt this area with their own judgment.”
He concludes toward the end of the show: “We are a deeply religious people, whose public institutions presuppose a supreme being. That’s who we are as Americans.”
NBC has reached out to the White House seeking comment.

Vice President Mike Pence: A Christian, Conservative, Republican (In That Order)

T

I first met Mike Pence in 1987. I was extremely impressed with his love of God and his commitment to serving Jesus Christ every second of his life. Equally impressive is that his lovely wife, Karen, shared his Judeo-Christian Values.

A couple months later Mike called me up one day to say he was going to be in town the next day and invited me to lunch. I informed him that I had just been laid off from my job with a local manufacturing company. With that, he said, "Chris, I'm hanging up right now. You are going to get a call within the hour for a job that I think would be perfect for you." About half an hour later the phone rang. When I identified myself the voice on the other end said, "Chris, this is Senator Dat Coats." I laughed out loud and said, "Okay, seriously, who is this?" "This is United States Senator Dan Coats. How would you like to come to work for me?"

I worked for Senator Coats for the next six years and we remained in contact with each other during his time as our United States Ambassador to Germany and once again when he returned home and won another term as U.S. Senator for Indiana.

When I had my radio talk show, then Congressman Mike Pence appeared on the program over eight times. Two of those times were when he tuned into the program while driving through Richmond and decided to pull into the station. I just flipped him a headset and swung a microphone around for him.

Mike is the real McCoy, and it has been a distinct honor a privilege to call him my friend.

What do I miss the most? Now that he's Vice President, I miss our lunches at Applebees.
