Francis had absolutely nothing to start with, but he devoted himself to the task of repairing the church of San Damiano wholeheartedly, loading his back with stones, although he was worn out with fasting. He begged help in the form of alms from those among whom he had lived as a wealthy young man, and he was not ashamed.
