One day, when blessed Francis stayed to pray in a cell behind the friary, the bishop of Assisi came to see him. He entered the house and knocked on the door of the cell that led to where Francis was. When the door opened, he immediately entered the cell; it had been furnished with mats and a small nook where blessed Francis stayed. Since he knew that the holy father had shown him signs of close friendship and tokens of love, he entered without embarrassment and lifted up the mat to see him. But hardly had he passed his head through the small nook when, willy-nilly, he was violently thrust outside by the will of the Lord because he was not worthy to see the saint. He left the cell immediately, walking out backwards, trembling and stunned. He confessed his fault to the brothers and his sorrow for having entered the cell that day.
