The Portiuncula: No Poorer Church Could Be Found

The Abbot of the monastery of St. Benedict of Mount Subasio took counsel with his brothers and they gave blessed Francis and his brothers the church of St. Mary of the Portiuncula, the poorest church they owned. No poorer church could be found in the whole territory of the city of Assisi. This was what blessed Francis had long desired. The Abbot said to blessed Francis: "Brother, we have granted your request. But it is our wish that, if the Lord multiplies your Order, this friary will be the head of all those that you will found." These words were approved by blessed Francis and by all his brothers.
