Friars often raise large buildings, and violate our holy poverty, and by so doing provoke criticism and set a bad examplt. And sometimes, in order to obtain a better or holier place, or a larger congregation, they abandon their own houses out of covetousness and greed; or they pull them down and build others that are large and pretentious. Consequently, those who have contributed to their coswt, and others who see it, are greatly offended and distressed. So it is better for the friars to erect humble little buildings, remaining loyal to their profession and setting a good example to their neighbors, rather than to act contrary to their profession and set a bad example to others.
Saint Francis of Assisi
