Sacred Vessels

"Whoever comes from God listens to the words of God." We who have been commissioned to deal with things divine should not only hear and fulfill what God says, but, what is more, in order to root in ourselves the transcendence of our Creator and our obedience to him, we should take reverent care of the sacred vessels and the liturgical books which contain his holy words.

  1. I was thinking the same thing, ccheryl.

Also, I have noticed at Mass for the past couple of years, more and more people are remaining kneeling during the washing of the vessels after Holy Communion. A quiet time of reverence.

  2. Yes, we are the sacred vessels the moment we consume the Body and Blood of Jesus, and we become the liturgical books when the words are written in our hearts rather than on stone. Shouldn't we, therefore, take better care of our bodies?

  3. Yes, gabrielle, not too long ago just a handful of people knelt after returning to their pews, and now nearly everyone kneels until the tabernacle is closed.

Speaking of the tabernacle, I love the way it is spoken of in The Little Flowers of St. Francis: it is referred to as the womb of the Virgin Mary, holding within it the body of her Son, Jesus.
