The Portiuncula, located in Jerusalem, Ohio, in the Diocese of Steubenville, is home to the Franciscan Lay Apostolate. We are humbly committed to imitating the Gospel life of Christ, and observing the Sacraments. Placing ourselves under strict and holy obedience to the Bishop of Steubenville, the Magisterium, and Father Nick Ward, we follow the Medieval Penitential First Rule of the Third Order of St. Francis, dated 1221 A.D.

Heralding The Praises Of God
Every evening a herald should proclaim or use some other signal to announce to all the people that they are to render praise and thanks to the Lord God Almighty.
This letter has always fascinated me, because, as close as it seems to Muslim practice, you have to wonder if Francis' time in the east inspired him to write it.
Thank you, Friar. You make a very valid point. But I am reminded of the incident, very early in his ministry, when, seeing the beauty of the moon in all it's glory, St. Francis awoke the entire town with his madening clanging the church bells.
The townspeople were startled from their slumber and in fear of a terrible disaster.
Insted, they encountered the little saint exhorting everyone to awake and see how beautiful Sister Moon shone as a gift from Almighty God.
