Suffer To Be Ruled

T

"The horse is a noble and useful creature; for in his swiftest course he suffers himself to be ruled, and turned hither and thither, backwards and forwards, according to the will of the rider; so likewise should it be with the servant of God, who should suffer himself to be ruled, guided, turned and bent, according to the will of his superior; nay, of all others, for the love of Christ."

Mocking The Poor

T

Once blessed Francis had gone to the hermitage of the brothers near Roccabrizia to preach to the people of that region. Now, on the day of the sermon, a poor, miserable and sick man came in search of him. Blessed Francis was moved by his distress and spoke to his companion of his poverty and sickness. His companion answered him: "Brother, it is true, he is very poor, but perhaps there in no other man richer in desire in all providence than he." The saint chided him for having spoken so uncharitably, and the brother admitted his sin. Blessed Francis then said to him: "Are you willing to perform a penance I shall give you?" "Gladly," he said. "Well, take off your tunic and go throw yourself half clothed at the feet of the poor man; tell him how you have sinned against him, and ask him to pray that God may forgive you." The brother went and did what blessed Francis had prescribed...

Pace e Bene

T

By divine intervention Francis began to strive after Gospel perfection, inviting others also to lead a life of penance. His words were full of power of the Holy Spirit, never empty or ridiculous, and they went straight to the heart, so that his hearers were amazed. In all his sermons he began by wishing his hearers peace, saying to them, "Pace e Bene" (The Peace of the Lord be with you), a form of greeting which he had learned by a revelation.

Forgive Your Injuries And Abandon Your Hatred

T

Original Tunic worn by St. Francis at the time of his death
On display in Assisi, Italy

At Celle, in the lordship of Perugia, blessed Francis met a poor man whom he had formerly known in the world, and asked him, 'Brother, how are things with you?' But the man began to utter angry curses on his master, saying, 'Thanks to my master - God curse him! - I have had nothing but misfortune, for he has stripped me of all I possess.'

Seeing him persist in mortal hatred, blessed Francis was filled with pity for his soul, and said, 'Brother, pardon your master for the love of God, and free your own soul; it is possible that he will restore to you whatever he has taken away. Otherwise, you have lost your goods and will lose your soul as well.' And the man said, 'I cannot fully forgive him unless he first restores to me what he has taken away.' Then blessed Francis said to him, 'Look, I will give you this cloak; I beg you to forgive your master for the love of God.' And at once his heart was melted and touched by this act of kindness, and he forgave his master his wrongs.

Penetrating The Dwelling Places Of Heaven

Prayer was Francis' chief comfort in this life of contemplation in which he became a fellow-citizen of the angels, as he penetrated the dwelling places of heaven in his eager search for his Beloved, from whom he was separated only by a partition of flesh.

St. Francis And The Swallows

T

Continuing his journey, Francis preached in the neighboring villages, and eventually he came to Alviano. Here he summoned the whole population and called for silence, but he could scarcely be heard above the cries of the swallows which were nesting there and making a lot of noise. He spoke to them, while the crowd was listening, and said, "My sisters, it is my turn to speak now. You have said enough already. Listen to God's word and be quiet until the sermon is over." Immediately they became silent, just as if they understood, and they never moved until the whole sermon was finished. The onlookers were amazed and gave glory to God. The story of this miracle was told far and wide, so that people had great reverence for the saint and were moved to greater faith.

DONALD TRUMP: Vatican Public Enemy Number One

T

T

The Barabbas Effect by Chris Dickson, FLA

T

THE YOKE MOVEMENT

“Remember: voting with the crowd can get you Barabbas over Jesus.”

PicturePope Leo XIII
This year marks the 125th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical “Sapiente Christianae” (on Christians as Citizens). He begins his Encyclical with these ominous words of warning: “From day to day it becomes more and more evident how needful it is that the principles of Christian wisdom should be borne in mind, and that the life, the morals and the institutions of nations should be wholly conformed to them. For, when these principles have been disregarded, evils so vast have accrued that no right-minded man can face the trials of the time being without grave anxiety or consider the future without alarm.”

Pope Leo goes on to explain that the overwhelming proof of the disintegration of Christian faith leads to verbal assaults upon the faith, and that those nations who deviate from Christian principles through moral decline cause the very “foundation of human society” disintegrate right along with it. The Holy Father further states, “From God has the duty been assigned to the Church not only to interpose resistance, if at any time the State rule should run counter to religion, but further, to make a strong endeavor that the power of the Gospel may pervade the law and institution of those nations.”

Nowhere is this more apparent than what is happening today in the United States of America where abortion-on-demand and abortifacient drugs are being forced upon religious convents and seminaries as well as Catholic Universities, where marriage between a man and a woman is being attacked and re-defined and where open hostility and verbal attacks are being levied upon the Church for standing up for its biblical principles. Our responsibilities toward God as Christians are being replaced by the whims of the Secular Humanists.

Since 1890, when Pope Leo XIII wrote his Encyclical, the world has gone through two World Wars as well as countless other smaller wars and “police actions.” One need look no further than to what is happening today to Christians in the Middle East, more specifically in Syria and Iraq, to grasp the full severity of his warnings taking real shape in our world today. That being said, no other election or conflict more effectively points out the correctness of this Encyclical than the events leading up to and the devastating results of the Second World War.

Adolph Hitler may have become the dictator of Germany but his rise to power was facilitated first and foremost by the German people who elected Hitler as their Chancellor and overwhelmingly voted the Nazi party to take over their Parliament and thus the leadership of their country. With nearly 45% of the Catholic vote and an overwhelming majority of Protestants voting for the Nazi's with a 65% majority vote (Lutherans being the overwhelming majority) Hitler and his Nazi Party were placed in a perfect position to take over control of the country.

“Luther, expected that Jews would follow the Apostle Paul's lead to convert to Christianity.”

PictureMartin Luther
Sister Dottie Almloney teaches a certification course at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (Pa). In her Master's Degree research project at Lancaster [Pa] Theological Seminary, she states:

“The Nazis used Martin Luther's anti-Semitic words from his 1543 book, “On the Jews and Their Lies” to justify their actions.” “Luther,” she said, “expected that Jews would follow the Apostle Paul's lead to convert to Christianity.” When they didn't he [Luther] denounced them. “Be on your guard against the Jews,” he wrote. “Wherever they have synagogues nothing is found but a den of devils. Their schools and synagogues,” he wrote, “should be burned.” Their prayer books and Talmudic writings should, “be taken from them.” ... “This,” Luther wrote, “is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians.”

So is Pope Leo XIII telling us that we are not to be good citizens and that we shouldn't love our country of birth? Absolutely not! Leo stated: “We are bound, then, to love dearly the country whence we have received the means of enjoyment this mortal life affords, but we have a much more urgent obligation to love, with ardent love, the Church which we owe the life of the soul, a life that will endure forever.”

Pope Leo goes on to say, “Moreover, if we would judge aright, the supernatural love for the Church and the natural love of our country proceed from the same eternal principle, since God Himself is their author and originating cause.” For Leo, the two sides of this coin should not collide with one another, but rather balance with one another for he believed that human laws alone should never sit above divine law and it is the duty of Christians to defend and maintain Life and Liberty.

Even more significant, however, Pope Leo goes even further with this concept by openly condemning those Christians who place human desires over God's desires when he states: “To recoil before an enemy or to keep silence when from all sides such clamors are raised against the truth, is part of a man devoid of character or who entertains doubt as to the truth of what he professes to believe. In both cases such mode of behaving is base and is insulting to God, and both are incompatible with the salvation of mankind.”

The Venerable Bishop Fulton J. Sheen took it a step further when he said, “Most people today want a religion which suits the way they live, rather than on which makes demands on them. Religion thus becomes a luxury like an opera, not a responsibility like life.”

Who, then, is responsible for carrying out our Christian duty concerning our political activities? Is it solely the responsibility of our Pope, our bishops, or our priests? The Reverend Franklin Graham answered this question very well when he said, “Who says we can't be in politics? The anti-God people are.” He went on further to say, “Secularism and Communism are the same thing. They're godless. They're anti-Christ.

We risk our faith if we doubt the power of the Church to govern our souls...

PictureThe US Capital building
So now we have the secularists who've taken over the country. They've taken control of Washington.” Turning to Pope Leo XIII once again, we see this question being addressed as well in his Encyclical: “In respect consequently, to the duties that bind us to God and the Church, it should be borne earnestly in mind that in propagating Christian truth and warding off errors the zeal of the laity should as far as possible, be brought absolutely to pray.” In other words, when it comes to politics, it is the responsibility of the rank and file lay persons in the pews upon whose shoulders this squarely falls.

We risk our faith if we doubt the power of the Church to govern our souls and defer the same to our government. Although the Church and State remain separate, to separate morality from governing of the people is nothing short of schizophrenia. Unless the government is moral, we are under no obligation as Christians to adhere to their rule. Our Forefathers understood very well that man is of a fallen nature and unless the government set up some sort of guidelines that controlled society's behavior, the newly formed nation would not exist for very long. For this reason they laid down some rules or guidelines that, if followed, would allow us to live together in peace and harmony.

Today, however, these fundamental precepts which are the building blocks of the American Experiment are under attack. Catholic hospitals, Catholic charities, Catholic adoption agencies, local parishes and dioceses, and even individual Catholic business owners are being forced to violate the sanctity of their biblical beliefs. Our Federal Government is launching law suits against our Christian institutions as well as individual Christians.

So where do we go from here? Well, let's return once again to Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical to see what he has to say about mixing politics with religion: “Honor, then, those who shrink not from entering the arena as often as need calls, believing and being convinced that the violence of injustice will be brought to an end and finally give way to the sanctity of right and religion.”

Christians, especially Roman Catholic Christians, need to get involved! After all, the largest Christian denomination in America are the Roman Catholics. The second largest Christian denomination in America is made up of the “Fallen-Away” Catholics, or those who no longer attend weekly services. When 90% of those who attend weekly Mass are Pro-Life and 90% of those who attend only at Christmas and Easter (if at all) are Pro-Abortion, our task before us appears daunting and indeed overwhelming. But does that mean we simply throw our hands in the air and give up? No! It means that we need to fight harder and we need to fight smarter. I've heard it said by many people, “I never vote. What difference does my one vote make, anyway?”

...Congress recommended the printing of federal laws in both German and English.

Picture
Well, in 1796 a proposal before Congress recommended the printing of federal laws in both German and English. No bill was actually voted upon. The House debated the proposal on January 13, 1795 without teaching a decision, and a vote to adjourn and consider the recommendation at a later date was defeated by one vote, 42 to 41. Because the motion to adjourn did not pass, the matter was dropped. The House debated this recommendation once again on February 16, 1795, but the final result was the approval of a bill to publish existing and future laws in English only. This bill was approved by the Senate and signed into law by President George Washington a month later. Coincidentally, a year earlier, in the 1794 elections, Dwight Foster, a Federalist from Massachusetts, won his bid for re-election to Congress by a mere 50.8 % of the vote. So you see, your vote does count after all!

I leave you with one final caveat from Pope Leo XIII: “Therefore, they who cherish the prudence of the flesh and who pretend to be unaware that every Christian ought to be a valiant soldier of Christ; they who would fain obtain the rewards owing to conquerors, while they are leading the lives of cowards, untouched in the fight, are so far from thwarting the onward march of the evils disposed that on the contrary, they even help it forward.”

A Time To Become Holy by Chris Dickson, FLA

T

THE YOKE MOVEMENT

"Be Holy for I Am Holy."

Picture
Advent is a time for us to seek holiness. Holiness is not something that is meant to be had by the few. It is meant for you and me! It is meant for all of us! In 1 Peter, God tells us to “Be holy for I am holy.” Would God instruct us to be something that is impossible for us to accomplish?
Certainly not! We see in Psalm 51 how we are to become holy through a broken and contrite heart. So how do we obtain a broken and contrite heart? St. Francis of Assisi showed great insight here by telling his followers that he preferred absolutely nothing to preaching repentance and penance, which was considered folly at that time because the fear and love of the Lord had died out in the world. The same can be said of our modern, Post-Christian world as well.

So how do we grow in holiness? We grow in holiness by accepting the Father's love and seeking His forgiveness. The closer we grow with the Father, the more we become like Jesus, and like Jesus, our hearts must first truly burn with a desire to grow in holiness. This is impossible without first surrendering our lives to God just as Jesus surrendered his to the Father.

We are in the middle of a crisis of faith...

Picture
Advent is a time to reflect on our status as prodigal sons and daughters of the Most High. Just as the prodigal son, we too must eventually come to our senses. Today's modernist society too often justifies sin or else denies it completely. Rampant drug and alcohol abuse, disrespect for adults and for one another, malicious gossip, cheating on our income taxes, refusing to forgive others, sexual depravity and Abortion have become society's new norm. We are in the middle of a crisis of faith in Jesus Christ. It's very easy to allow ourselves to become discouraged by all the negativity, but we must realize that the people are hungry. The people are hungry for the truth. They desire more out of life than simply wandering aimlessly about, day in and day out, in total hopelessness. They want to find joy. But there can be no joy separate from holiness!

We should frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation...

Picture
To grow in holiness, we must first return to regularly receiving the Sacraments and the first step to returning to the Sacraments is an examination of conscience; the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Just as the prodigal son returned to his father and begged forgiveness for his sins, we must also return to the Father and beg his forgiveness for sinning against Him. St.Francis of Assisi tells us that we should frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a month. Why is that so important? Well, it helps us see our sins and seek God's mercy by experiencing His tender love for us. We can never hope to grow in holiness without the Sacrament of Reconciliation for if we are truly going to get serious about coming to our senses and receiving the Father’s love, then we will first go to Him with broken and contrite hearts and confess our sins to Him, not just during Advent, but at least once a month. Why is that? Because it helps us to see our sins, to seek God’s mercy, and to experience his tender love for us.

Don't expect holiness to happen overnight...

Picture
The second step in growing in holiness is by returning to the Eucharist. We must never separate the Eucharist from our daily lives or our daily lives from the Eucharist. Jesus satisfies our hunger for him by giving us his Body and Blood, just as we must satisfy His hunger for the souls of the poor, the marginalized and the oppressed by becoming Eucharistic for the people.

Don't expect holiness to happen overnight. Most of us become overwhelmed and discouraged if we don't see ourselves become holy right away. Remember, the saints were first sinners, some of them great sinners. It took many years for the saints to become holy as they were prone to the same trials and failures that we experience in today's world. The important thing is that we persevere, realizing that the Father loves us unconditionally.

God's Voice Rings Cold Once Again On Today's Church

T

The San Damiano Cross now hangs in the Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi in Italy

Francis was walking one day near the church of St. Damian, which had nearly fallen to ruin and was abandoned by everyone. Led by the Spirit, he went in and fell down before the crucifix in devout and humble supplication; and smitten by unusual visitations, he found himself other than he had been when he entered. While he was thus affected, something unheard of before happened to him: the painted image of Christ crucified moved its lips and spoke. Calling him by name it said, "Francis, go, repair my house, which, as you see, is falling completely to ruin." From then on compassion for the crucified was rooted in his holy soul, and, as it can be piously supposed, the stigmata of the venerable passion were deeply imprinted on his heart, though not yet upon his flesh.

The Chapter Of Mats

T

When blessed Francis was at the Chapter General held at Saint Mary of the Portiuncula - known as the Chapter of Mats, because the only shelters there consisted of rush-mats, which were used by five thousand friars - a number of prudent and learned friars went to the Lord Cardinal of Ostia who was present, and said to him, 'My Lord, we wish that you would persuade Brother Francis to follow the advice of the wiser brethren, and allow himself to be guided by them.' And they quoted Rules of Saint Benedict, Saint Augustine, and Saint Bernard, which lay down the principles of the regular life.

Saint Francis replied, 'My brothers! My brothers! God has called me by the say of simplicity and humility, and has in truth revealed this way for me and for all who are willing to trust and follow me...The Lord told me he wished me to be a new kind of simpleton in this world, and He does not wish us to live by any other wisdom but this. God will confound you through your own prudence and learning.'

The Conversion of a Soldier

Major Chris Dickson

There was a certain strong soldier who had won many victories and later became a Friar Minor. And when soldiers laughed at him because he had joined such an Order rather then the Templars or a similar Order where he could do much good and still fight battles, he replied: "I tell you that when I feel thirst, hunger, cold, and such things, the impulse of pride and concupiscence and such still attacks me. How much worse would it be if I saw my feet shod in armor and I was on a handsome horse and so on!"

And he added: "So far I was strong in fighting others - from now on I want to be strong fighting myself!"

Thanks be to God.

Pelosi's Abortion Statements a Scandal Says EWTN Program Host

Contact: Michelle Johnson, EWTN Global Catholic Network, 205-795-5769, mjohnson@ewtn.com

IRONDALE, Alabama, Aug. 27 /Christian Newswire/ -- EWTN Global Catholic Network TV Host Father Mitch Pacwa S.J. took Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to task last night for misrepresenting Church teaching on abortion in an Aug. 24 interview with Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press.

In her interview, Pelosi told Brokow that "as an ardent, practicing Catholic" who has studied the issue of when life begins for "a long time," she could say that the Church fathers, especially St. Augustine, were not sure of when life begins, and that the Church had only made this decision in the past 50 years. She then drew the conclusion that this should not impact on a woman's right to choose.

On his Tuesday night show, "Threshold of Faith," Father Pacwa explained that Pelosi was in grave error about the teaching of the Church fathers, summarized what other Church leaders are saying about her public statements, and offered her this piece of advice:

"[A]s an ardent, practicing Catholic, you must conform your conscience to the teaching of the Church that goes back [to] the very beginning of the Church on this moral issue."

After explaining how grave a sin abortion was to Church fathers and citing early Church leaders and Church documents, Father Pacwa gave this moral counsel to Pelosi: "If you are ignorant and you don't know [when life begins], then you go on the side of safety and protecting rights. You don't bomb a city where there might be a lot of civilians. You say, 'Well, I’m not sure.' Well, then be on the side of safety. Protect the lives of the innocent, the non-combatants.

"Same with the unborn children. You must also go on the side of your ignorance to say then, "If I don't know, then I'll protect all the more. I don't want to act while I'm ignorant."

Father Pacwa called on Pelosi to use her position "to make sure not that there are few and rare abortions, but that there are zero abortions and that you would do everything you can to protect life. This is the duty of us all."

When Preaching, Do Not Conceal The Vices Of The People

T

When blessed Francis preached, he did not conceal the vices of the people when they publicly offended God or neighbor. But the Lord gave him such great grace that all those who heard or saw him had only fear and veneration for him because of the riches of the gifts he had received from God. Likewise, even when he reprimanded them, they were ashamed, but they were also edified; sometimes this was even more motive for him to pray to God for them with greater fervor, and they were converted to the Lord.

In The Silence Of The Heart God Speaks

T

"We cannot find God in noise and agitation. Nature: trees, flowers, and grass grow in silence. The stars, the moon, and the sun move in silence. What is essential is not what we say but what God tells us and what He tells others through us. In silence He listens to us; in silence He speaks to our souls. In silence we are granted the privilege of listening to His voice.

Silence of our eyes.
Silence of our ears.
Silence of our mouths.
Silence of our minds.
...in the silence of the heart
God will speak.

Silence of the heart is necessary so you can hear God everywhere - in the closing of the door, in the person who needs you, in the birds that sing, in the flowers, in the animals.

If we are careful of silence it will be easy to pray."

"It is only by mental prayer and spiritual reading that we can cultivate the gift of prayer. Mental prayer is greatly fostered by simplicity - that is, forgetfulness of self by transcending of the body and of our senses, and by frequent aspirations that feed our prayer. 'In mental prayer,' says Saint John Vianney, 'shut your eyes, shut your mouth, and open your heart.' In vocal prayer we speak to God; in mental prayer He speaks to us. It is then that God pours Himself into us.

"Our prayers should be burning words coming forth from the furnace of hearts filled with love."

T

The Franciscan Tau Cross

T

The first recorded reference to the TAU is from Ezekiel 9:4, "Go through the city of Jerusalem and put a TAU on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it." The TAU is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet and looks very much like the letter "T".

At the Fourth Lateran Council, on November 11, 1215, Pope Innocent made reference to the TAU and quoted the above verse in reference to the profaning of the Holy Places by the Saracens. It is widely accepted that St. Francis was present at the Fourth Lateran Council and that he heard the words of Pope Innocent III when he said, "The TAU has exactly the same form as the Cross on which our Lord was crucified on Calvary, and only those will be marked with this sign and will obtain mercy who have mortified their flesh and conformed their life to that of the Crucified Savior. From then on, the TAU became Francis' own coat of arms.

Francis used the TAU in his writings, painted in on the walls and doors of the places where he stayed, and used it as his only signature on his writings.

St. Bonaventure said, "This TAU symbol had all the veneration and all the devotion of the saint: he spoke of it often in order to recommend it, and he traced it on himself before beginning each of his actions."

Thomas of Celano, another Franciscan historian writes, "Francis preferred the Tau above all other symbols: he utilized it as his only signature for his letters, and he painted the image of it on the walls of all the places in which he stayed."

In the famous blessing of Brother Leo, Francis wrote on parchment, "May the Lord bless you and keep you! May the Lord show His face to you and be merciful to you! May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace! God bless you Brother Leo!" Francis sketched a head (of Brother Leo) and then drew the TAU over this portrait.

THE TAU AS OUR FRANCISCAN SYMBOL

Where did the TAU come from and what does it mean? (Rhymes with "How") Simply and basically, the TAU represents the Cross. It is also the last letter of the Hebrew Alphabet. However, the two major influences on Francis concerning the TAU were the Antonians and the Fourth Lateran Council.

St. Francis borrowed the TAU and what it meant to him from the Antonians. They were a religious community of men founded in 1095 whose sole function was to care for lepers. They were disbanded as an Order by the Church in the 1500's because leprosy was no longer a problem and many of the religious orders had fallen into Theological problems. On their habit was painted a great TAU cross. Francis was very familiar with these men because they staffed the leper house in Assisi and the hospital of St. Blase in Rome where Francis went to stay. This is now the church of San Francisco A Ripa.

Every time you see St. Anthony, "the Abbot or Hermit" in art, he is portrayed with the TAU.

St. Francis was exposed to the TAU through the direct influence of the Antonians, but the greatest influence of all that made the TAU so dear to Francis, whereby it became his signature, was the Fourth Lateran Council.

Pope Innocent III opened the Council on November 11, 1215, with these words: "I have desired with great desire to eat this Passover with you." (Luke 22-15.) Innocent announced that for him, for the Church, and for every Catholic at the time, the symbol they were to take as the sign of their Passover was the TAU Cross.

He incorporated into his homily the statement from Ezekiel (9:4) that the elect, the chosen, those who are concerned will be marked with the sign of the TAU. He explained that this Passover is a three-fold Passover.

Every Catholic must be involved in this triple Passover: A Corporal Passover, a Spiritual Passover and an Eternal Passover.

These became some of the most precious themes of Francis' preaching. He must have taken them so deeply to heart that when Pope Innocent III ended his homily with "BE CHAMPIONS OF THE TAU", Francis evidently took that as a personal statement and made the TAU his own symbol: a symbol for his order, his signature, painted it everywhere, and had great devotion to it for the rest of his life.

Making A "Clean Sweep" Of The Churches

Once while he was staying at Saint Mary of the Portiuncula and there were as yet few friars, St. Francis went through the villages and churches round about the city of Assisi proclaiming and preaching to the people that they should do penance. And he carried a broom to sweep out the churches that were dirty, for he was very grieved when he found any church not as clean as he wished.

"Son" Bathing

T

The Youth Conference at the Franciscan University of Steubenville

"O wonderful ascent, O stupendous descent! O sublime humility! O humble sublimity, that the Lord of the Universe, God and Son of God, should so humbly hide himself, for our salvation, in what seems to be only a small piece of bread! Look, then, upon the humility of God! And pour out your hearts before him. Humble yourselves that he might exalt you. Hold back nothing of yourselves, that he may receive your all who gave his all to you."

With Their Eyes Directed Toward The Ground

T

With their eyes directed toward the ground, the brothers clung to heaven with their minds. No envy, no malice, no rancor, no abusive speech, no suspicion, no bitterness found any place in them; but great concord, continual quiet, thanksgiving, and the voice of praise were in them. These were the teachings of their beloved St. Francis, by which he formed his new sons, not by words alone, but above all in deeds and in truth.

Long Winded Sermons

St. Francis was convinced that conversion of sinners was a work of mercy that was more acceptable to the Father than any sacrifice, particularly if it was done in the spirit of perfect charity, more by example than by preaching, more by fervent prayer than by long-winded sermons!
