Once when Brother John was staying in the Place of Mogliano of the Custody of Fermo in the Province of the Marches...when he had proceeded as far as the Preface of the Blessed Virgin, the supernatural illumination and sweet consolation of God's love increased so much within him that when he reached the Qui pridie he could hardly endure such overwhelming sweetness. Finally, when he came to the Consecration itself and began to pronounce the words of the Consecration over the Host, he kept repeating the first of the formula - Hoc est - Hoc est - very often, and he was unable to go any further. And the reason why he could not go on was that e felt and saw the presence of Christ and of a throngof angels and saints, so that he almost fainted because of their grandur which he felt in his soul.

Saint Francis deprived himself of necessary things, which the brothers procured for him with great difficulty but most willingly; and after having cajoled us not to be angry, he gave away the great interior and external joy what he had denied his own body. Some brothers, in fact, sometimes would ask him for it out of devotion, and he would immediately give it to them. The Vile Wickedness of Detractors

In Francis' eyes the vice of detraction in particular seemed to be the antithesis of the religious spirit and an enemy of grace. He had a horror of it, like a snake-bite or a deadly pest, and he declared that it was an abomination in God's sight because the detractor feeds on the blood of the souls which he kills with his tongue. Once we heard a friar taking away another's good name, he turned to his vicar saying, "Quick, quick! Look into it carefully. If the friar accused is innocent, make an example of his accuser for all the others by correcting him severely." He sometimes sentenced a friar guilty of hurting another's good name to be deprived of his habit, adding that he should not raise his eyes to God until he had done his best to restore what he had taken. "A detractor," he would say, "is guilty of greater wickedness than a robber, because Christ's law which reaches its perfection in love obliges us to desire the good of our neighbor's soul more than of his body."

About Brother Bernard's Gift of Contemplation

How much grace God gave to the poor men who followed the Gospel and who voluntarily gave up all things for the love of God was manifested by Brother Bernard of Quintavalle who, after he had taken the habit of St. Francis, was very frequently rapt in God by the contemplation of heavenly things.

Thus one time it happened that while he was attending Mass in  a church and his whole mind was on God, he became so absorbed and rapt in contemplation that during the Elevation of the Body of Christ he was not at all aware of it and did not kneel down when the others knelt, and he did not draw his cowl back as did the others who were there, but he stayed motionless, without blinking his eyes, gazing straight ahead, from morning until noon.

But after none he came back to himself and went through the Place shouting in a voice filled with wonder: "Oh, Brothers! Oh, Brothers! Oh, Brothers! There is no man in all this country, no matter how great and noble he is, who, if he were promised a very beautiful palace full of gold, would not willingly carry a sack full of the most filthy manure in order to obtain that very noble treasure!"

Greetings!
Last night the sleep of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, Monastic, was interrupted close to midnight as a raging fire burned our Chapel and Common Center to the ground. Viola and I were the first on the scene as I saw the orange/red glow through our hermitage's back windows. Upon arriving we found there were no hoses capable of stopping the raging flames. I ran up the hill and woke up the community, and we started the almost futile task of spraying down the part of the Common Center that had not yet burned and retrieving anything from inside we could still find.

We lost some most valuable things in the fire. Our community archives were lost and all of the books in our library. The Troubadour stockroom and inventory were lost to the flames. All of the various awards received were melted in the intense heat of the fire. We have some back-ups from computers, but nothing current. It is our hope that most of this is covered by our insurance.

Cardinal Egan released a statement today addressing the fact that Rudy Giuliani received Communion at the Papal Mass in New York. This is going to be big news because this is the first time a Cardinal, let alone a bishop, has addressed a pro-abortion Catholic politician receiving Communion since Archbishop Burke publically stated that he would deny John Kerry Communion should he present himself in his diocese.

Once in the Marches of Ancona St. Francis found a certain shepherd feeding a herd of she-goats and he-goats in the fields. Among the great number of these goats there was one little lamb going along and feeding humbly and quietly. When blessed Francis saw it, he stopped and, touched inwardly with sorrow of heart, then groaning deeply, he said to the brother who was with him: "Do you see the sheep that walks so meekly among the goats? I tell you that our Lord Jesus Christ walked in the same way meekly and humbly among the pharisees and chief priests. The Church is not primarily an earthly reality. She is the visible face of a kingdom that is not of this world, a kingdom that is supernatural and heavenly, not natural and earthly. That means part of the Church's work is to bear witness to her own supernatural reality and to the presence of God's power in the world. Similarly, as Christians, we, too, are called to bear witness to those truths and to be stewards of the mysteries of God.

At the 2008 Defending the Faith Conference, we'll look beyond the veil separating heaven from earth to see the eternal truths that guide the Church in history. We'll also explore the way our understanding of those mysteries should impact the way we live in the world as spouses, parents, employees, and citizens. Finally, we'll examine how our role as stewards should impact the worship we offer God and how, in the Church's liturgy, the Holy Spirit unites the heavenly kingdom and earthly kingdom, the heavenly liturgy and the earthly liturgy, making one kingdom, one liturgy through grace.

This July, join our host Dr. Scott Hahn and speakers Kimberly Hahn, Father Benedict Groeschel, CFR, Father Robert Barron, Steve Ray, and others as well as more than a thousand Catholics from around the country for a weekend full of penetrating talks, prayer, worship, and fellowship. He looks forward to sharing the fruit of this study at next year's DTF conference, and in a projected book on Church renewal.
