Mountain Woodsorrel Thought Extinct Found Near The Portiuncula

T

Local naturalists documented the lovely mountain woodsorrel, Oxalis montana, pictured above, this spring. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this flower was thought to be extirpated (no longer found) in Ohio, but not so fast because we have one here! In addition to its delicate flower, the mountain woodsorrel is easily identifiable by its large clover-like leaves. We couldn’t ask for a more beautiful illustration of the importance of conservation and its role in preserving biodiversity. Thanks to Daniel Caron for the photo and documentation.
